Vaccine prevents and treats cervical cancer tumors in mice

A researcher in the Netherlands has developed a vaccine against cervical cancer that prevents the disease in mice and treats existing tumors in the animals. The work was part of Laura Bungener's doctoral research. Her supervisor was Prof. J.C. Wilschut, RUG, Medische Microbiologie. The vaccines induce an immune response to proteins from the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer, rendering the virus harmless.
