Pilot program targets mother-to-child HIV transmission in rural Zimbabwe

A program bringing services aimed at preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV resulted in high acceptance of HIV testing by pregnant women and administering of prophylactic treatment where there had been none in a rural area of Zimbabwe.

F. Perez at the University of Bordeaux, ISPED, and colleagues reported on the pilot program.

"Zimbabwe has one of the highest rates of HIV seroprevalence in the world. In 2001 only 4% of women and children in need of services for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV were receiving them," Perez and coauthors said.
