Study: Patient-controlled epidural better than IV opioid analgesia during labor

Results of a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial indicate that patient-controlled epidural analgesia is more effective than patient-controlled IV opioid analgesia and isn't associated with higher incidence of cesarean delivery.

S.H. Halpern and colleagues, Sunnybrook & Women's College, Toronto, Canada, conducted the study to learn "whether patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) for labor affected the incidence of cesarean delivery when compared with patient-controlled IV opioid analgesia (PCIA)."
