Saudi Arabia bans some forms of in-vitro fertilization

The Saudi government has banned in-vitro fertilization outside of marriage or in surrogate cases, apparently for religious reasons. The decision bans using the sperm of a divorced or deceased husband to fertilize a woman's egg; using a surrogate woman's womb to carry an egg fertilized by another couple; or in-vitro fertilization when the couple is not married. A copy of the ban acquired by the Associated Press also prohibited doctors from carrying out genetic intervention except for treating genetic diseases. It did not elaborate. The government did not give an explanation for the ban but religion is believed to be the reason....
