Calcium channel blockers boost women's risk of CVD death than other treatments

Women taking calcium channel blockers for hypertension - either alone or combined with a diuretic - face a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than do women taking other types of anti-hypertensive drugs, an analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative shows. The study, led by Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, PhD, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York, is the first to look at the safety of combination antihypertensive therapy for postmenopausal women.
