Evidence lacking on long-term safety of OC use to suppress menstruation

Based on their review of studies examining the long-term effects of oral contraceptive use for menstrual suppression, researchers concluded that there's not enough scientific evidence about the practice to comment on its safety. Chris L. Hitchcock, University of British Columbia, and J.C. Prior, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, wrote, "For many years, individual women and doctors have experimented with extending the duration of active oral contraceptive (OC) pills between pill-free intervals (long OC) to control menstruation. The U.S. approval of an OC with 84 active days and 7 pill-free days in 2003 has attracted considerable media attention." ...
