Selective estrogen receptor modulators prevent neointima formation in ovariectomized rats after vascular injury, according to researchers in drug design at the University of Helsinki. "Exploitation of estrogen's vasculoprotective properties in drug design is difficult due to its adverse effects on endometrium and breast. Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) act as estrogen agonists in some tissues but are anti-estrogenic in others.
