Doctors who aided 66-year-old mother may face ethics investigation in Romania

Doctors who performed in vitro fertilization for a 66-year-old woman who gave birth to a baby girl may face an ethics investigation, Romania's Health Minister said January 19, 2005. Adriana Iliescu is believed to be the world's oldest mother, after giving birth to a 1.45-kilogram (3.19-pound) girl by Caesarean section. Health Minister Mircea Cinteza said the birth was a medical success, but questioned the moral grounds for performing in vitro fertilization on Iliescu. "The doctors achieved a medical first, respecting the laws of Romania. But they took on a (questionable) moral stance," he told reporters. ...
