The council also commends the strengthened references to whole grains, including the whole grain serving recommendation, as whole grains are an important source of complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Whole grain foods have been linked to protecting people from a number of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
