Study shows Novartis drug could reduce risk of breast cancer returning

A drug currently used against advanced breast cancer may provide better protection against recurrence or spreading than standard medication for post-menopausal women who have been treated for early forms of the disease, Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis AG and independent researchers said January 26, 2005.

Clinical data presented at a conference on breast cancer in St. Gallen, Switzerland, shows that letrozole, which currently has U.S. approval for use after women finish a lengthy course of the current drug, tamoxifen, reduces the risk the risk of cancer returning or spreading to other parts of the body.
