Maine professor recounts battle with breast cancer

Tony Brinkley is a busy man, active and fit, and disinclined to fret over his health.

So, a couple of years ago, when the fifty-something associate professor of English at the University of Maine noted some swelling near the nipple of his right breast, he didn't linger over it. It wasn't painful, and, though the surrounding skin became a little puckered, it wasn't alarming to look at.

"I certainly noticed it," the soft-spoken educator said in a recent interview at his office on the Orono campus. "But I figured it was just another disfigurement of old age."
