New immunotherapeutic approach evaluated for advanced disease

Scientists at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center are evaluating a new immunotherapeutic approach to treating metastatic breast cancer.

The approach, now in early trials at a handful of institutions around the U.S., counters one of the most vexing problems in fighting cancer: the inability of the immune system to "see" cancer cells as foreign or undesirable, says Charles Shapiro, director of breast medical oncology at The Ohio State University Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, and principal investigator of the study at Ohio State.
