IL-10, TNF-alpha levels may indicate stage of cervical lesions induced by HPV

Levels of interleukin-10 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in cervical secretions may serve as indicators of local immune responses and stage of cervical lesions induced by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. "Cytokines are released in response to infection of the uterine cervix by high-risk HPV," noted K.K. Azar and colleagues, Kanazawa University, Japan. They measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interferon-gamma (INF-gamma), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-10 levels "in the cervical secretions of 120 cytologically normal or equivocal and 91 abnormal Japanese women."
