Remifentanil provided effective, reliable analgesia during labor

A recent report describes remifentanil is a novel systemic analgesic for labor pain.

According to scientists in Israel, "In a double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial, we compared the analgesic effect of remifentanil in patient-controlled IV analgesia (PCIA) during labor and delivery with the effect of an IV infusion of meperidine."

S. Evron and colleagues of the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon described their study, "Eighty-eight healthy term parturients who requested IV analgesia for labor pain were enrolled in the study and were randomly assigned to receive either increasing doses (0.27-0.93 mcg/kg per bolus) of PCIA remifentanil (n=43)...
