Cyclin D1 variant seems to reduce effect of hormonal exposure in older women

The presence of a polymorphism in the cyclin D1 gene appears to reduce the effect of hormonal exposure on postmenopausal breast cancer, and predicts survival, according to a study from Vanderbilt University. "Cyclin D1 (CCND1) is a key cell cycle regulatory protein that governs cell cycle progression from the G(1) to S phase. A common polymorphism (A870G) in exon 4 of the CCND1 gene produces an alternate transcript (transcript-b) that preferentially encodes a protein with enhanced cell transformation activity and possible prolonged half-life," explained Xiao-Ou Shu and associates.
