CDC study compares BV diagnostic tests for use in a resource-poor setting

Researchers with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compared three techniques for diagnosing bacterial vaginosis in a resource-poor setting.

S.F. Posner and colleagues evaluated Amsel's criteria, the FemExam card, and pH plus amine methods with the help of 200 Azerbaijani women.

The women were "[participating] in a study about reproductive health that included a gynecological examination and an interviewer-administered survey."

The team reported, "Using the WHO [World Health Organization] syndromic diagnosis algorithm, nearly all women (99%) had abnormal vaginal discharge.
