White blood cell count may be prognostic indicator in postmenopausal women

White blood cell (WBC) count may predict cardiovascular events and risk of death in postmenopausal women who are not currently identified by traditional cardiovascular risk factors, study results suggest. Increasing evidence supports a role for inflammation in the development of atherosclerosis (thickening and hardening of the arteries). Measurement of a number of different molecules involved in inflammation has been proposed as a way to identify and monitor patients at risk for coronary heart disease.
