Cardiac death after radiation for breast cancer dramatically down, study shows

Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have concluded that the risk of ischemic heart disease and, ultimately, cardiac death following radiation treatment for breast cancer has steadily declined over the last quarter century.

The new study, the largest and most comprehensive prospective study of its kind, was published in the March 16 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The study offers scientific evidence to what was long thought to be true but never proven: that improvements in radiation techniques and delivery have greatly impacted radiation-associated cardiac mortality.
