Enzyme expression ratio is a prognostic indicator in tamoxifen-treated patients

The ratio of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase types 1 and 2 expression is a prognostic indicator for recurrence-free survival of breast cancer patients treated with tamoxifen, according to a study from Sweden. "The 17beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17HSD) enzymes are involved in the local regulation of sex steroids. The 17HSD type 1 enzyme catalyzes the interconversion of the weak estrone (E1) to the more potent estradiol (E2), whereas 17HSD type 2 catalyzes the oxidation of E2 to E1," explained C.
