Preventing CVD may ameliorate some adverse effects of APOE genotype

Preventing cardiovascular disease in women as they age may reduce some of the adverse effects that the apolipoprotein E genotype has on cognitive function.

"The apolipoprotein E (APOE) e4 allele increases risk of Alzheimer disease and cardiovascular diseases. We examined APOE genotypes alone or combined with cardiovascular conditions in relation to cognitive function in 4,227 Nurses' Health Study participants, 70-80 years old," said J.E. Kang and colleagues at Harvard University's Brigham and Women's Hospital.
