Abdominal radical trachelectomy is a fertility-preserving option for women with early-stage cervical cancer, note gynecologic oncologists. The procedure is an "alternative to radical hysterectomy or chemoradiation for young women with stage IA2 to IB cervical cancers," said L. Ungar and colleagues, St. Stephen Hospital, Budapest, Hungary. They reported their experience with 33 patients (mean age 30.5, range 23-37) who opted for abdominal radical trachelectomy. "Three procedures were abandoned because of positive pelvic nodes (two patients) and involvement of the margin between the amputated cervix and uterine fundus (one patient)....
