High HIV rate found among South African women refusing antenatal screening

Almost half (44%) of South African women attending an antenatal clinic in Johannesburg and who initially declined HIV testing were found to be positive for the viral infection.

According to M. Mseleku and colleagues, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Hospital, "This study was instituted primarily to determine the HIV seroprevalence of pregnant South African women who refused routine HIV testing at the antenatal clinic of the Johannesburg Hospital, South Africa.
