Abdominal fat, high insulin resistance impair metabolic health of older women

The combination of increased abdominal fat and high insulin resistance comprises a key risk factor for postmenopausal women's cardiovascular health, reports a study from Canada. M.E. Piche and colleagues, University of Laval, evaluated "the respective contribution of abdominal visceral adipose tissue (AT) accumulation and insulin resistance (IR) to the determination of a comprehensive cardiovascular metabolic risk profile in 108 postmenopausal women not receiving hormone therapy." According to their report, "Insulin sensitivity (M/I) was determined by a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, and visceral AT area was measured by computed tomography....
