IVF/breast cancer patients safely use tamoxifen or letrozole plus low-dose FSH

A new study suggests that adding tamoxifen or letrozole to standard fertility drugs during in vitro fertilization (IVF) can preserve fertility in breast cancer patients prior to chemotherapy without increasing the risk of breast cancer. The study and an accompanying editorial were published online April 11, 2005, in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Increasing numbers of women with breast cancer are seeking technologies such as IVF to preserve their fertility before chemotherapy, which is known to cause infertility by reducing the number of ovarian follicles.
