Decreased activity in TGF-beta pathway linked to increased disease risk

Decreased activity within the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) pathway is associated with increased breast cancer risk, researchers report. The study, by researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Northwestern University's Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and published in the April 15, 2005, Cancer Research journal, is the first aimed at determining whether various combinations of two naturally-occurring variants of the TGF-beta pathway may predict breast cancer risk.
