Breast cancer risk higher with synthetic progestin than micronized progesterone

Data from the large E3N-EPIC cohort study indicate that postmenopausal women's risk of breast cancer is higher when their hormone replacement therapy regimen includes synthetic progestins rather than micronized progesterone. Researchers said, "Most epidemiological studies have shown an increase in breast cancer risk related to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use. A recent large cohort study showed effects of similar magnitude for different types of progestogens and for different routes of administration of estrogens evaluated.
