New treatment developed for BRCA1/2-associated disease

Researchers have discovered a new way of treating and preventing hereditary breast cancer, according to a report in the April 14, 2005, issue of Nature.

The paper describes how the use of a chemical inhibitor can specifically kill tumor cells, which have a defect in the gene causing hereditary breast cancer. This new treatment targets only the tumor cells and is not likely to affect other healthy cells in the body. This discovery could also lead to a vaccine to prevent hereditary breast cancer.
