Clinical trials of onercept for psoriasis, Canvaxin for melanoma discontinued

Serono (SRA) announced the discontinuation of 2 phase 3 clinical trial programs: onercept (recombinant tumor necrosis factor binding protein) in moderate-to-severe psoriasis and Canvaxin in stage 4 melanoma, licensed from CancerVax. The decision to discontinue these clinical trials is based on the recommendations of 2 separate independent data and safety monitoring boards (DSMBs). In 2004, Serono initiated 3 phase 3 clinical trials in moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Investigators have recently reported 2 patients diagnosed with sepsis, one of whom subsequently died.
