Coping methods of women with familial cancer history vary with risk appraisal

How women with familial histories of breast cancer cope with the knowledge of their disease risk varies with how they appraise their risk, a study has found. Diane R. Lancaster, PhD, RN, of the Brigham & Women's Hospital Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice, said her "descriptive correlational study was based on Neuman's Systems Model and was designed to examine how women with family histories of breast cancer appraise and cope with breast cancer risk." She reported, "Ninety percent of 209 women in the sample appraised their degree of breast cancer threat as moderate or high. Women with high degrees of appraised risk had low breast cancer risk...
