Japanese women have lower recurrence rate than other ethnic groups

Early-stage breast cancer patients of Japanese descent who are treated with a lumpectomy and radiation therapy are more likely to be cured of their cancer than women of other ancestries, study results show. Analysis of data on 896 patients treated at Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu from 1990 to 2001, found that only 6 women (0.67%) experienced a local recurrence of their breast cancer in the first 6 years after treatment. The patients in the study all had Tis, T1 or T2 tumors, considered early stage, with no spread to other organs or distant sites in the body.
