Acute imbibing disrupts hormonal milieu of lactating women, reduces milk supply

Women's experience and science have clashed on a number of issues, including the effect of having a glass of wine or a beer to help lactation. Now researchers are reporting that acute consumption of alcohol interferes with the "hormonal milieu" of lactating women, and results in diminished milk supply.

Julie A. Mennella and colleagues at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, wrote, "Despite the lack of scientific evidence to support the claim that alcohol is a galactagogue, lactating women have been advised to drink alcohol as an aid to lactation for centuries.
