North American women don't get enough vitamin D

Vitamin D inadequacy may be overlooked by clinicians, thus leading to inadequate vitamin D supplementation in patients with osteoporosis, according to new research presented May 19, 2005, at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 14th Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress. A study of 1,554 postmenopausal women showed that 52% of these women had suboptimal vitamin D concentrations. Most study participants were healthy, ambulatory, community-dwelling, white women who were well educated.
