Study: Delayed motherhood in mice causes shorter life expectancy of offspring

Researchers in Spain report that in mice, first-time motherhood at older age is associated with reduced body weight and shorter life expectancy of offspring.

Their study, expected to be controversial, appears in the June 2005 issue of Biology of Reproduction.

Negative effects of late maternal age in women, such as abnormal numbers of chromosomes in their children, are well known. However, other potential negative effects on offspring from delayed motherhood have been only anecdotal.
