Birth factors associated with risk for autism

Prenatal environmental factors and parental mental health may be associated with a risk of autism, according to an analysis conducted by researchers at the Aarhus University in Denmark, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although the factors seem to act independently of each other, babies who were in a breech position at delivery, were more than five weeks premature, had a family history of schizophrenia, or had a low Apgar score 5 minutes after birth were found have an increased risk to develop autism later in childhood.
