Peer education boosts number of low-income women who breastfeed

Low-income women are more likely to breastfeed when given health education, especially when learning takes place in an informal, interactive discussion group setting, according to a new review of studies.

"It's not just about giving information. It's about how the information is conveyed," says coauthor M.J. Renfrew, who heads the Mother and Infant Research Unit at the University of York, in England. The review appears in a recent issue of The Cochrane Library, a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration (Dyson L., et al. Interventions for promoting the initiation of breastfeeding (Review). The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2005; Issue 2).
