Improved abuse screening could improve health of young minority women

Adolescent women of racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S. have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases that put them at higher risk of pelvic inflammatory disease and sexually transmitted disease (STD), a recent study shows.

According to research led by Jane Dimmitt Champion, PhD, associate professor of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, these adolescents reported a history of sexual and physical abuse, and many barriers to healthcare. These places abused minority adolescents with STDs at even higher risk of pelvic inflammatory disease and HIV/STDs, says Champion.
