Sodium-rich carbonated mineral water doesn't affect women's bone health

Sodium-rich carbonated mineral water doesn't affect bone remodeling in healthy postmenopausal women, according to research from Spain.

S. Schoppen and colleagues with the Spanish Council for Scientific Research, or CSIC, in Madrid, investigated "the possible effects of consuming sodium (Na)-rich carbonated mineral water on bone remodeling and urinary mineral excretion in postmenopausal women."

Their study group comprised 18 amenorrheic (>1 year), healthy, not obese women.

"No woman was taking estrogen replacement therapy, mineral and vitamin supplements, phytoestrogens, or medications known to affect bone and lipid metabolism,"...
