Women among hardest hit by HIV/AIDS

As the number of women infected with HIV and AIDS continues to rise worldwide, American women are a growing part of the statistic.

AIDS cases in U.S. women increased almost 15% between 1999 and 2003, according to statistics compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the same period, AIDS cases in men grew by only about 1%. Younger women and minorities seem to be affected disproportionately, Jennifer Wider, MD, wrote in an article for the Society for Women's Health Research.
