Birth weight and adult BMI are prognostic indicators of CHD in women

Birth weight and body mass index as an adult are prognostic indicators of coronary heart disease in women, according to an analysis of data from the Nurses' Health Study.

Harvard University researchers wanted "to determine whether birth weight and adult body size interact to predict coronary heart disease in women, as has been observed for men [and] to determine whether birth weight and adult body size interact to predict risk of stroke."

Study data were from 66,111 female nurses followed since 1976 who were born of singleton, term pregnancies and reported their birth weight in 1992. From this group, 1,504 instances of coronary heart disease...
