Poor lung function increases cancer risk, especially in women

People with poor lung function - particularly women - are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer, suggests a new study. Lung cancer is the most lethal cancer in the world, killing 328 million people globally in 2000. The leading cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoking. Researchers analyzed studies that examined the relationship between lung function (measured by forced expiratory volume in 1 second or FEV1) and lung cancer. To ensure the results were as accurate as possible, only large studies that adjusted for smoking habits were included.
