"Molecular apocrine" breast tumors identified

Novel "molecular apocrine" breast tumors have been discovered and characterized through gene microarray analysis.

"Previous microarray studies on breast cancer identified multiple tumor classes, of which the most prominent, named luminal and basal, differ in expression of the estrogen receptor alpha gene (ER)," scientists in Switzerland explained.

In a recent study, P. Farmer and coauthors at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics identified "a group of breast tumors with increased androgen signalling and a 'molecular apocrine' gene expression profile."
