To better understand bacterial vaginosis (BV), more research is needed on vaginal flora, local immunity to the flora, and host-parasite interactions. According to recent research from Sweden, "The syndrome bacterial vaginosis is characterized by a disturbed vaginal microflora in which the normally occurring lactobacilli yield quantitatively to an overgrowth of mainly anaerobic bacteria.
