Data shows Herceptin plus chemotherapy reduces risk of breast cancer recurrence

Genentech, Inc. (DNA) announced that a joint interim analysis of two phase III trials of Herceptin (trastuzumab) plus chemotherapy showed the addition of Herceptin reduced the risk of breast cancer recurrence by 52% in women with early-stage, operable human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer, compared to patients who received chemotherapy alone (or a hazard ratio of 0.48). After 4 years of study follow-up, 15% of women treated with Herceptin plus chemotherapy experienced disease recurrence, compared to 33% of women treated with chemotherapy alone.
