Nurses must develop culturally sensitive methods to aid African American couples coping with a breast cancer diagnosis. "To explore the process of coping with breast cancer among African American women and their spouses," investigators in the United States "conducted an "exploratory, qualitative study using grounded theory methods" in a "large metropolitan area in the mid-Atlantic United States." P. D. Morgan and colleagues described their study: "Twelve African American couples (N=24) were asked to complete a background data sheet and participate in a face-to-face semistructured interview.
