Accurately defining the disease extent has the potential to improve cervical cancer survival.

Researchers in Australia discuss "the current staging methods and the definition of advanced cervical cancer" in a recently published article.

"The clinical International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system has been found to be inaccurate and this limits treatment planning," D. Allen and colleagues stated. "More accurate management could be based on surgicopathological features of the tumor."
