Metallography assay for detection of HER2 gene status in breast cancer is developed

December 29th, 2005

Scientists have developed a bright-field metallography assay for concomitant detection of HER2 gene status and protein expression in invasive carcinoma of the breast.

According to recent research published in the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, "Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has both excellent sensitivity and specificity in detecting HER2 gene amplification in invasive breast carcinoma. FISH has not been widely implemented in clinical practice because of reagent costs and the special instrumentation and expertise required to perform and integrate the assay.
