Action of hormone replacement therapy on insulin secretion merits further study

Despite the possible increased risk of cardiovascular disease, researchers believe the action of hormone replacement therapy on insulin secretion merits further study.

According to a report from England, "There is a persistent perception that estrogens have an adverse effect on carbohydrate metabolism. It might therefore be expected that their use would result in a corresponding increase in the incidence of diabetes."

"Recent evidence from clinical trials suggesting that women on postmenopausal estrogen hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have a reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes therefore appears paradoxical," wrote I.F. Godsland and colleagues....
