Breast cancer resistance protein may not be primarily involved in multiple myeloma

According to a study from the Netherlands, breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) may not be primarily involved in drug resistance in multiple myeloma (MM). "The BCRP ABCG2 is an ATP-binding-cassette transporter involved in the transport of drugs used in the treatment of MM." "Its expression, function and clinical significance in MM, however, are unknown," wrote M.H.G.P. Raaijmakers and colleagues, University of Nijmegen Medical Center. "We report that BCRP is preferentially expressed and functionally active in normal plasma cells but that its function is significantly impaired in plasma cells in newly diagnosed MM." ...
