Family influences cancer treatment decisions differently in racial groups

The influence of the family in the decision-making process for breast cancer treatment may account for the significant racial differences in breast cancer management, according to a new study. Published in the February 15, 2006, print issue of Cancer and January 9, 2006, online, the study reveals that older, Hispanic women - more than any other racial group - rely on family to make treatment decisions. Perhaps most important, patients who identified the family as the final treatment decision-maker were more likely to be treated with mastectomy rather than breast-conserving surgery (BCS).
