Smoking during early pregnancy increases the risk of obesity in young children. Scientists in the United States conducted a study "to examine the extent to which maternal prenatal smoking is associated with adiposity, central adiposity, and blood pressure in 3-year-old children." E. Oken and colleagues of Harvard University explained, "We studied 746 mother-child pairs in Project Viva, a prospective cohort study, and categorized mothers as never, early pregnancy, or former smokers.
